A Look at the Use of Jumper Cables

A jump start from another vehicle can help you get back up and running if your car is suffering from an under-charged battery. This boost can help prevent a costly tow that would also likely waste a lot of time. At Volvo Cars San Diego, we encourage you to follow the process below should you find yourself in need of a jump.

First, position both cars facing each other, about 18" apart. Then, turn both vehicles completely off and set the parking brakes. With the cars secured, you'll want to begin by connecting a positive end of the jumper cable to the positive post on the dead battery, then connect the other positive end to the good battery's positive post.

Finally, attach a negative end of the cable to the good battery's negative post, and finish by attaching the other negative end of the cable to a metal section of the engine separate from the battery and any moving parts. You can then start the engine of the vehicle with the good battery, followed by the engine of the vehicle with the bad battery until you're able to get the vehicle with the bad battery to start.

Of course, if you do need to jump start your vehicle, it's a good idea to stop by our service department to take care of any underlying issues.
